A little late, but the Christmas cards I made for the people I love in my life.

A little late, but the Christmas cards I made for the people I love in my life.

This month I complete a Project called Paper Space. Using origami, I studied the movement and negative space of the free falling cliff diver (above) and translated his movement into an abstract paper sculpture.

This was not my favourite project, but in the end, I felt I have produced my best work yet. I went out of my comfort zone and the process became one that was much more organic, resulting in a piece that better visual portrays my vision as a designer.

I will keep this process in mind while completing the next project and use it to hopefully express myself as a designer continuously and successfully.

The color cube was my last assignment in design dynamics. What I though would be a simple fun assignment, turned to be a complete deserter! Every possible thing went wrong the night before it was due. The morning it was due, I had to run around the city buying materials to create the whole cube over again. stores did not open until 10am, the cube was due at 3pm. 11:30am I was still cutting the pieces out! Fire alarms in my building, needing to take pictures for light study of the final finished cube, creating process sheets, me not having my usb stick because I forgot it at sherwood prints shop. Admittedly I was behind on this project, but  nothing was going right while trying to complete it. Somehow, I still have no idea how, but somehow I managed to complete this assignment (minus the sketches needed). Not my best work, but looking back, not so shabby considering the time frame and obstacles faced while creating it.

Dancers in Space Project. This project was selected to be in the year end show. Here is some of the processes taken to complete the final 12x12” birch wood models. I did sketches of the Ki:wai dance group, showing different compositions, analyzing the negative and positive space, dominate, primary, secondary and tertiary elements in the dancers movements. I then created six  6” millboard models showing form and movement. Those models where then translated into three 12”  birch wood models. The models where then painted in either black, white, grey or clear glaze.

The semester is finally over and I’m completely exhausted. Reflecting back on some of the projects I did allows me to gain a better understand why. I did tones of work in the last 4 months, some better than others, but all equally time consuming and demanding. I don’t have pictures of everything I did as some of them are still being marked, but I will post once I receive them. Over the past four months I have learned a lot about the process of creating design. I am discovering my own process and some of my flaws (being a perfectionist and trying to create things that are above my ability at this moment or time frame given). Learning to let go and understand that it’s ok not to succeed every time has been a huge lesson for me. The most important thing is that I have compete every project to the best of my ability in the short time frame given. That’s something to be proud of. Each project handed in gave me more confidence to move forward and take on another challenge. I look forward to the challenges in next semester, and the next 4 years, but until then, I’m enjoying this well deserved break!

Final composition where made, evolving the textures by combining separate elements from a few of the 3D textures and manipulating them to create a whole new textile mural. Here are photos of my final piece.

Proceses in creating twelve 3 x 3 inch renderings of the rubbing using only paper, card stock and foam board included cutting, folding, twisting, rubbing, burning, blending, chopping, stabbing, frying, backing, wetting, oiling and pasting the materials to create new textures.

IRD-Design Dynamics started off with the exploration of textures. I went out in the city in search of textures that where held organic and geometric pattern qualities. I would take a piece of paper and different led weight pencils and do rubbing. These are some of the results. I had a minimum of 30 to do, 15 would be chosen for the final project.

IN design communications, Perspective drawing has been the focus, and besides drafting, one of the more difficult things for me to grasp. I was first given the task to complete these construction lines. Next, a spiral staircase needed to be added to the space and using the designer assigned to me, which was Zaha Hadid, I had to redesign the space inspired by the vision of the designer. The last photo is the first step in my redesign. I have to add shadows on a top layer of velum (this is due tomorrow….AHHHH!), then complete the final piece. This is just on of the zillion things to do in this class. Shadowing assignments, sketches, movie scene redesigns, ect ect ect!
